Laser tattoo removal — how it works and how many sessions

A tattoo you no longer like does not have to stay forever. Laser removal is the most common way to fade or remove it. Here is how it works and what to expect.

How the Pico laser works

Tattoo ink sits in the skin, and the body cannot clear it on its own. A Pico laser sends extremely short pulses of light that break the pigment into fine particles. Over time the body clears them naturally, and the tattoo gradually fades.

It is not instant: after each session the skin recovers while the body works on clearing the broken-up ink. That is why it takes time.

How many sessions

One session is rarely enough. Usually several are needed, spaced a few weeks apart so the skin can recover in between. The exact number cannot be predicted precisely in advance. It depends on:

  • ink colour: dark tones are often easier to treat than some light or vivid colours;
  • depth: ink placed deeper takes longer;
  • age of the tattoo: older tattoos often fade more readily than fresh ones;
  • size and density: a larger or heavier tattoo needs more work;
  • your skin and how it responds.

For this reason we do not promise a specific number of sessions or complete removal. We give a realistic estimate after assessing the tattoo.

How a session goes

The skin is cleansed, then the laser treats the tattoo with a series of short pulses. The sensation is often described as the snap of a rubber band or a light sting. A session is short: depending on size, from about 30 minutes. Prices are by size (small, medium, large) and start from 30 euro.

Afterwards the skin may be red, slightly swollen or tender, and a fine crust can form in places. Reactions are individual.

Aftercare

  • Protect the area from the sun and use sunscreen.
  • Do not scratch or pick crusts and blisters.
  • Keep the skin clean and moisturised with gentle products.
  • Avoid saunas, swimming and heavy rubbing in the first days.

Why the consultation comes first

At the consultation we look at the tattoo and your skin, discuss the goal (full removal, fading ahead of a cover-up, or for camouflage) and set realistic expectations. That way you know what lies ahead before we begin. Results are individual and we give no guarantees.

The next step

If you would rather conceal an old tattoo or permanent makeup than remove it, see our camouflage tattooing page. You can book a consultation to discuss your case.
